Derry Track Club’s four-time Paralympic gold medallist Jason Smyth made a much-awaited start to the season when he clocked an impressive 10.45 (+1.3) seconds for 100m in Florida.
That was only good enough for fifth in the C Final won by Germany’s Christian Blum in 10.31 seconds. Blum was European Indoor silver medallist in the 60m at the 2015 European Indoor Championships. Smyth had earlier run a 10.47 (+1.2) in his heat.
Smyth is a walk on for Ireland’s Paralympic team in Rio this year but requires at least a B mark of 10.38 seconds if he is to be selected for the mainstream European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam.
Six years ago Smyth made history when he became the first Paralympic athlete to qualify for the Europeans and reached the semi-final in the Mont Juic Stadium in Barcelona.
